What’s on the Menu?

A few weeks ago, my social media algorithm decided I needed to see a bunch of talented cooks preparing “regular” food. Omelets, burgers, pizza, etc. I saw some cool stuff! Mostly what I saw were professionals who took raw materials and within a moment or two created the best-looking burger and fries I have ever seen.

What does this have to do with healthcare analytics? Consistency can be fast and cheap, and innovation is complex and requires more time and resources.

Fast food places need consistency…they require that a burger is a burger, no matter where you are! And when you want a Big Mac…you get a Big Mac..Period! These places know when the crowd is coming…they start making burgers and fries to meet demand before the demand is there!

Its easy and its fast…its cheap!

But, if you want something different, something innovative..something that you haven’t seen before…that will cost you…that will require more money…and you need to plan and make reservations in advance.

In the context of healthcare analytics…many people want to order from the “value Menu”. They want to know, the patient count…or the number of patients who tested positive with COVID-19 last week.

A lot of folks need more sophisticated ‘menu’..the customer may want to know how many patients were scheduled for a procedure then had a COVID-19 positive test and then had the procedure delayed.

For our part, those of us who create these consumable healthcare data products, it is our responsibility to be good ‘concierge’. We need to know the locations of all the great restaurants and be able to suggest a place to our guest that is appropriate. Like a good concierge, we will ask, what are you interested in…what kind of budget do you have…is there anything you want to avoid? We have a responsibility to help.

For your part, if really want to eat at ‘Maison de mauvaises données’ understand that “Nuggets de poulet et frites et du ketchup” is going to be a little different and take more resources to produce.
